Hedges form boundaries within or around your property. They are an excellent way of creating a habitat for all
forms of wild life. Hedges can be evergreen or deciduous with an array of leaf colour and flowers.
Hedging trees Selection
There are many shrubs and trees that can be used for hedging.
Five key points on selection are:
- Decide on the reason for the hedge, may be to provide shade, height, leaf interest, flowers or security.
- Check the soil conditions you have are correct for the plant.
- Evergreen or deciduous
- Height of initial plants
- Eventual height of plants
Hedging trees planting
As with all plants the soil is the primary factor on the health and success of your hedge.
Ensure that the soil is well dug over and free from perennial weeds.
Add additional drainage material if the site is wet, or humus to hold moisture if it is dry.
Dig in composted manure or your own compost if available
If you are unable to hand water the area think about laying a porous water pipe first which can be used in dry spells to help the hedge establish.
Use a Mycorrhizal Fungi when planting
Provide protection from wild life damage in early years
Hedging After Care
Hedges should be kept free of weeds and grass as they will compete for essential plant nutrients.
On smaller hedges mulch and feed the hedge anually
from an early age lightly prune the tips to encourage branching
Cut the hedge anually once at the height you require
