Gardening Tips/Hints

  • Spray roses for blackspot and mildew every three weeks and feed around the root area with a balanced slow release rose feed.
  • Check around newly planted trees and shrubs to make sure that spring storms have not loosened ties or rocked the plants. Prune off any damage shoots or branches.
  • Start to plant clematis and perennials for lasting colour throughout the summer.
  • Cut grass on the highest mower setting, this will help to stop moss growth and then feed with a spring feed and weed. Rake out dead moss as it browns off.
  • Sow sweet peas, tomatoes and summer bedding plants under protection. Cover at night with horticultural fleece to protect from night frosts.
  • As the soil warms up start to break down the soil in your vegetable garden into a finer tilth. Plant first early potatoes, sow broad beans and early peas.
  • Pick off the dead heads off daffodil and other narcissus flowers once they have begun to wither,
  • Take cuttings of fuchsias, geraniums, dahlias and chrysanthemums during April, for a late summer flowering display.
  • Container grown plants, check to see if they are pot bound and need potting on into larger containers.
  • Plant up containers and hanging baskets with summer flowering bedding plants. Keep under protection untill danger of frost has gone.
  • Plant out Pansies and violas for instant colour.
  • Dig in manure ready for runner bean plants in late May.
